Title: You Win
Day/Theme: May 31/ I'd rather leave while I'm in love
Series: New Moon
Character/Pairing: Edward/Bella, mostly one-sided Charlie/Renee
Rating: G
Word Count: 609
Notes: This turned out a bit weird and the characters are so OOC. You may all shoot me now.
Edward parked next to the curb and bounded out of the car and across the street in a blur of mute colors. He took a deep breath and smoothed out his caramel sweater and black jacket. He knocked lightly and was surprised when Bella opened the door quickly, grabbed him by the arm, led him into the living room and deposited him onto the sofa next to Charlie. She gave him a pretty smile and ran out of the room. He looked after her retreating back in puzzlement. He was suddenly aware of Charlie's eyes on him and his thoughts.
Edward turned to Charlie and smiled politely. Charlie's eyes were still narrowed at the vampire, the baseball game now completely forgotten between the two men.
Bella's tricks won't work on me. I still distrust him. No matter how many times she sticks us in the same room, this boy won't earn my trust that easily.
Eward's smile faltered a bit. If Charlie could've read his mind, he'd hear Edward praying desperately for Bella to come back- and soon.
"You know, Edward," Charlie started casually, shifting a bit, "when Bella's mother and I started dating, I was very happy. I thought that we'd be together forever. But you know, son, sometimes life doesn't go exactly as you planned, -and this is bound to definitely go in the scooper sooner or later- and, well, I don't want Bella to get hurt- anymore than she is. You understand?" Charlie turned his stone cold eyes onto Edward's.
Edward wiped his lips for they had gone dry sometime ago and nodded his head limply, trying to understand what he was caught in, but falling miserably. His supernatural powers weren't looking useful to him now either.
They stayed silent for a few minutes when Edward finally heard Bella coming down the stairs softly. He felt relieved to get out of here as soon as possible. Charlie had become a hulking mass of somber moodiness and Edward didn't really want to be depressed when he went out with Bella this evening.
"Hi," she said softly and took her hands into his when he got up.
"You ready to go?" She nodded and said goodbye to her father and led Edward toward the door.
Bella's fingers barely touched the doorknob before a coherent thought traveled to Edward: I'd rather leave while I'm in love...Less painful that way. Edward, if you were smart, you'd realize this before either of you get too attached. Or worse, end up falling out of love before having the chance to spend forever with one another.
Edward froze with his hand on Bella's shoulder. She turned to face him and he could hear her unformed question.
He offered her a dazzling smile. "Um, you mind if we take a detour to my house instead of the restaurant?"
"Sure." Bella replied hesitantly, her confusion deepening.
"Don't worry- I think you'd like this."
She smiled and went through the door. Edward looked back toward the living room. Charlie's despondent thoughts surprisingly made the choice for him that he had been struggling with since he fell in love with Bella. It might have been too late for him and Renee, but well, Edward at least had the choice to spend forever with Bella before she fell out of love with him...
...like Renee had with Charlie...
If he said that his next steps were confident ones, he'd have been lying through his teeth, but at least he could say- even if it was very selfish of him- that he was now more afraid of losing her than of her losing her soul.

Date: 2007-06-09 05:22 am (UTC)You know with the OOCness, I wasn't worried about Charlie & Renee too much, but Bella and Edward were hard to write for some reason, despite the fact that they are wonderfully in-depth characters, so I'm glad it didn't subtract too much from the story.
Ms. Meyer would throttle me.
