Chapter One- In Which There’s A Strange Encounter

2, 530 words

The moment he said those three little words to her, she knew she was in trouble. For the second time that day, she had doubts about this thing called love.

The first time she had any doubts was just this morning. She was on her way to school and she had spotted a couple holding hands and strolling through the busy street. They had such pure content looks upon their faces and they looked to be in no hurry at all, unlike the other hundred people around them. Nobody else noticed them but she did. She couldn't help not noticing them. She had longed for that very thing for a while now. And now that she had it though, it was like she didn't want it anymore. Or rather she didn't want it with the person she had it with right now but with someone else.

Unfortunately for her, the someone else she had in mind lived on a totally different world from her own. It was a world with two moons and angels.

"Hitomi?" She heard Amano calling her.

Snapping back to reality, she realized Amano was looking at her expectantly. Was he waiting for her to confess her undying love for him as well? Well, the problem with that, thought Hitomi, was that she had no undying love to confess for him. Alright, so she had a crush on him but once he asked her out she realized that her crush was just that: a silly, schoolgirl crush. She had started to develop a huge crush on Van when she was in Gaea. But, she hadn't dared to explore those emotions. He was from a totally different planet and she knew it wouldn't work anyways. Besides, she was sure he only thought of her as friend.

So, when her adventures in Gaea were over, she had vowed to forget about Van and move on. It was exactly around this time that Amano had started showing an interest in her and asked out her. She almost fainted with delight that her longtime crush had finally noticed her. She said yes and they became an item around school. Yet, in the back of her mind, Hitomi still couldn't get rid of Van and the strange, fluttery feeling she had whenever she thought about him.

That was partially the reason she was dating Amano: so she could forget about Van. But, try as she might the stupid prince would not leave her mind or her heart. And, as more time passed since her leaving Gaea, she discovered she felt homesick for the planet and the young prince. She went into a surly state and whoever crossed her path thought she actually might commit suicide on the spot. Her best friend, Yukari, became more and more afraid to leave her friend alone for more than a second in case she should find one day that her best friend didn't exist anymore.

She had tried to resort to being her old self: dating Amano, running track, focusing on her schoolwork, and just enjoying life. But she would always come back to thinking about an ebony-haired prince, a beautiful planet with two moons, a knight, and a person who resembled a cat.

Returning her attention to the present, Hitomi decided in only two seconds flat what she should do: break up with Amano (because there was just nothing in the relationship and she didn't want to lead him on anymore, especially now that he said ‘I love you’ to her, which was bad all ready in itself) and decide to live an old spinster maid.

"Amano," she started, taking a deep breath, "I think it's time we move on and started seeing other people. I'm really sorry, but I just can't make that kind of commitment with you right now," she said gently, hoping to the gods she was doing the right thing and that it wouldn't be hard. Looking up from her fingers, she saw that Amano was looking more shocked than hurt. Hitomi let the silence reign thinking it best to let the news sink in before she did anything. So, Hitomi just sat there on the stands, looking out at the lavish track and waiting for something: for Amano to start reacting to the news, for the clouds to roll in front of the sun, for the earth to open up, swallow her whole and transport her to another similar looking planet, anything at all really.

Several minutes passed by like this when finally Amano looked Hitomi in the eyes and said to her, "I totally agree with you, Hitomi. I think it's time we broke up." He stated matter-of-factly. Getting caught by surprise, she looked like a fish with her mouth open. Even though Amano broke it to her gently, and he looked at her sweetly with those big, brown eyes, she was still a bit hurt. This was certainly not what she expected just a few minutes ago.

"Oh, all right," she said feebly. Amano stood up and walked into the school waving to her before going in. So, now she truly was alone. Even though it was the right thing to do, it didn't stop the loneliness from seeping into her heart.

Sitting there for quite some time, Hitomi let her eyelids droop and listened to the silence. She used to cherish these silent moments, but now they were unbearable to be around. It seemed too quite. Unnaturally silent. It made the volume of the tears she cried a hundredfold more louder... Like a drum beating inside of her... These days it seemed she could never stop shedding enough tears. She was a well that just kept on filling up with water... An endless pain of sorrow filled every fiber of her being... And she didn't think she could ever return to her old self... And the only person who she thought could save her had no idea she was in need of any saving...

The next day was Saturday, which meant no school to distract her and therefore unbearable. She woke up at six a.m. and mulled around the house, while everyone else in the house slept peacefully.

Feeling fed up with herself, Hitomi put on her sweats and decided to go to the park and watch the sunrise.

As soon as she stepped outside, the chilly air hit her warmed cheeks and she felt truly refreshed. The cold weather soothed her somehow... She felt relaxed and cool.

Almost ready to face the day...

Yet, as she walked the deserted streets to the park, she couldn't help but feel like she was being watched. Indeed, she felt kind of weird... A kind of feeling of strangeness...

Of course, she just shrugged it off as being totally paranoid about absolutely nothing... Probably her restless mind playing tricks on her.

Shaking her head to stop herself from going crazy, she continued on walking, and trying to hum a song to keep her mind preoccupied so as to not wander into insanity... The last thing she needed now was people thinking she was nuts.
**********

Entering the park, Hitomi went to the little hill overlooking the city, spread her sweatshirt onto the wet grass, and plopped down to enjoy one of nature's beautiful occurrences.

Meanwhile, a few yards from her, hiding behind an oh-so conveniently placed tree, a head with cute, brown cat-like ears poked itself out looking at Hitomi with the most peculiar expression on their face...

It was one distorted with a cross between concentration, thoughtfulness, annoyance, and sympathy...

It was obviously trying to make up its mind about something while looking a bit miffed about it.

The "it" was just about to come out of their hiding place when they suddenly looked straight ahead and gasped in surprise.

A bright, yellow ball was slowly making its way upward toward the sky and the creature, so it seemed, was greatly fascinated by it. They had glazed eyes and were drooling a bit at the corner of their mouth. Apparently, their mission of revealing themselves of just a few seconds ago quite forgotten.

After a few minutes, the creature came out of their reverie, and went back to spying on Hitomi. The only problem was the spot where Hitomi occupied just a few minutes ago was empty...

"Merle?"

"Ahhh!" The creature, Merle, jumped at the soft voice from behind her. "Oh, hi, Hitomi. What are you doing here?"

Hitomi looked a bit flabbagasted that Merle would even think of asking such a question when she was caught red-handed spying on her.

"I live here. But what are *you* doing here? On Earth?"

There was a pause; Merle had a guilty countenance on her face. Should she tell Hitomi the truth or just make up something on why she traveled to a strange planet, on which she only knew one person? On the one hand, telling Hitomi the real reason why she was here would only make her rush back to Gaea. And that would mean she would see Van again... and that could not happen... But on the other hand, she was sent here by Allan on a mission and if she didn't do what she was supposed to, then.... Merle shuddered at the thought. Even though she didn't know what would really happen to her, she didn't want to think about it. Even worse, if Van ever found out about her trying to stop Hitomi from coming back to Gaea, he would be really disappointed with her. And she couldn't handle having Van disappointed with her... But she couldn't handle Van loving Hitomi either...

Oh, what a conundrum she was in!

She started to open her mouth and prayed that something would come out.

"Uhh...uh...um...ah...I..."

"Merle, is everything all right? On Gaea, I mean. Is Van okay? Did something terrible happen? Come on, tell me!" Hitomi was on the verge of tears. She looked hysterical, to say the least.

"Everything's fine! I swear. It's just that well... Van's getting married!" Merle blurted out, which was not exactly the truth... but was the only thing that came into Merle's mind at the moment. She wasn't good at dealing with pressure, for god's sake!

Hitomi, on the other hand, looked shocked.

"Married?! To whom? Why?!"

"Uh, to this princess from this neighboring planet, I think." She finished a little vaguely.

Now, Merle wasn't a bad person in general... Just when it came to beautiful girls who wanted to steal her crush away from her... Not that Van loved her romantically in the first place, just as a little sister, but that certainly didn't help when Hitomi came into view and with the fact that Merle wanted to tackle Hitomi and beat her to a pulp... Because now that she knew about Gaea and Van knew about her, he wasn't even going to consider being with Merle in a romantic way, like the way she would've wanted.

But now the stupid moron had to go lovesick all over the place and she had to play Cupid, which was the worse thing that could happen- besides Van falling in love with Hitomi that is.

"So, why did you come here? To just tell me that Van's getting married?"

"Um, well, I just came here for a little vacation. I mean, when you were on Gaea, you kept talking about how much you missed this place and how beautiful it was. So, I wanted to see it for myself." Merle dragged the corners of her lips up into a fake smile. If Hitomi brought her excuses, she would be in seventh heaven.

“Oh,” Hitomi replied a bit dejectedly. She didn’t know what she expected when she saw Merle standing behind the tree, but this was certainly not it.

“So…,” Merle started, hopping from one heel to the other.

“So…”

“Merle, are you planning on staying here?”

“Um, well, sure. As long as I’m here, I might as well enjoy it.” Merle laughed a bit too loudly.

“Well, if you’re going to be here, where will you stay?”

“Um, stay?” Now that Merle thought about it she had no place to stay. Maybe planning on staying here on this foreign planet wasn’t such a good idea. But she wanted to see Earth and all its people. She couldn’t back out now. After all, she had to see this lie through. If she ran like she was on fire, Hitomi would get suspicious and she would figure out the truth. As well, if she went back to Gaea now, there would be a lot of questions. She was supposed to be kidnapped after all.

“Right. Well, could I stay with you?”

“All right. But I have no idea how I’m going to explain this to my parents.” She sighed and started walking toward the street, Merle at her heels.
**********

When they got back to Hitomi’s house, her parents were still not up yet, and they wouldn’t be for awhile, for it was a Saturday and they liked to sleep in. This gave Hitomi some time to think up something to tell her parents. She tried to think of something on their way from the park, but all she could think about was Van and another girl and marriage. The thought gave her a sickening feeling in the pit of her abdomen. Of course, not wanting to admit she had any feelings for that matter, she dismissed it as hunger.

So, as soon as they got back to the house, Hitomi cooked some eggs, and ham. Surprisingly, it made her think better.

Before, she could think of plans, but not of any good ones. Oh, but now, now they were somewhat better plans. Of course, the second part of those brilliant plans of hers was to convince Merle. The girl could be so uncooperative.

"But why not? It’s a good plan.”

“I am NOT sleeping on the roof! It’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard in my life! And, besides I don’t like sleeping up on high spaces in strange lands. What if I get attacked?”

“Get attacked by what?”

“I don’t know! Those weird, small, gray things we saw in the park. They looked evil to me.”

“You mean the pigeons? They’re not evil, for Pete’s sake! They wouldn’t attack you in a million years.”

“How do you know? I saw how they looked at me!”

“Hello! Everyone we passed by looked at you weirdly! You were sniffing the ground and walking on all fours!”

Merle didn’t see Hitomi’s point; she was just being curious.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t carry on their fighting, for Hitomi’s parents decided to enter at that moment. They were looking at their daughter weirdly and at the pan she was holding out toward her like a weapon and the girl standing next to her dressed in a weird costume.

“Mom! Dad!?” Hitomi screamed, becoming aware of her parents’ stares
