Basilisk volume one, chapter one rants
Mar. 23rd, 2008 09:42 pmSo, as if I needed another fandom to make me forget everything else, yesterday I started reading the manga Basilisk.
It's about the Kouga and Iga ninja, and seeing as I've all ready read The Kouga Ninja Scrolls, the book that inspired the manga/anime, and Japanese movie, I wanted to start on the manga as well.
Volume one, chapter one started out the same as the book, the battle between Yashamaru and Shougen at the Sunpu Castle is similar, although while the book is more detailed and gives you much more background and info, the manga is more detailed graphically- but that is kind of 'duh' since it's a graphic novel. I was just surprised at how ugly and horrific- looking all the characters are. They look more sinister than I imagined them to be. It's one thing to read the book, and imagine the characters how your mind pictures them, but to see them as someone else imagined them in their mind- it's kind of cool to see the similarities and differences that come up.
Another difference is that Kouga Danjou and Ogen speak a lot more than they do in the books. And the beginning is also a lot different because in the book there are more people witnessing the battle between Yashamaru and Shougen, but in the manga, you can only see three- Kouga Danjou, Ogen, and Hattori Hanzou. Yet another difference is the samurai in the manga are more important than the ninja, whereas I got the feeling the ninja are the most important in the book. The first meeting between Gennosuke and Oboro is different as well both in the manga and the book. They also end their names in -dono whenever they are talking to one another, but in the book, they only call each other by their first names.
Mostly everything is the same- except for the dialogue of course and extra parts added in.
I guess the only bad thing is that Basilisk isn't a very big fandom. )= (Oh, why, oh, why do I have to pick a fandom so freakishly small?? It's beyond me.)
I'll start on chapter two tonight, but I don't know if I will have time to finish it. (<---Hiding from her homework for the moment.)
