Um, I want to say yes, but I don't know definitively if Brian Michael Bendis is still writing The Avengers (it's not a title I've picked up yet, although I do want to get into it some day) and with how comics work, it's not a simple, straight answer. I do know that he's working on a series called The New Avengers now, as the old team of Avengers are disassembled, I believe.

I don't know when your friend stopped following the Avengers/BMB work, but a lot has happened in the comic news regarding the Avengers.

There was a comic book story arc called The Avengers: Disassembled (a fairly recent story arc) wherein the old team of Avengers broke up and then a new team of the Avengers was reconstructed under the title New Avengers which BMB now works on, I know that much. And the New Avengers is a 2005 title.

Avengers: Disassembled was the first story arc in a controversial 3 part story arc by Marvel in which this character called the Scarlet Witch - who was part of the old Avengers team- has a nervous breakdown after she finds out that her children were a figment of her imagination and, because she's a powerful witch, she goes on a rampage and strips the majority of mutants of their powers - because the X-Men and the Avengers are sort of in the same comic universe and what happens to one team affects the other team as well. House of M is the second part and Civil War is the third part - Civil War, I'd say isn't really the third part of this whole arc so much as the aftermath of these whole events set off by the Scarlet Witch, it's more based on events after House of M so they're all interconnected.

this page (http://www.comicvine.com/avengers/49-10730/) is the Avengers: Disassembled issues page on ComicVine, a pretty good site for comics. particularly this section: Continued from Avengers vol.3, the series returned to it's original numbering with issue 500. Although the change was of short use, since issue 503 marked the last issue of the Avengers, and revamped the book into the New Avengers. which reiterates my point that the Avengers are no more and they're now called the New Avengers (Avengers Disassembled is then issues 500-503 of the Avengers and issue #500 was published in September of 2004).

The wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avengers_Disassembled) page on the Avengers: Disassembled title is also quite informative, if your friend doesn't mind getting spoiled with everything that's happened so far (and that's a lot that happens, that is even mentioned in some of the current titles I'm interested in right now, like The Young Avengers and X-Factor series - because like I said previously, in the comic universe, especially with a big Marvel event like this - more than one title will talk about it/will be affected by it).

I hope that helps your friend. And I hope you don't mind my rambling, I just love talking about comics. :D
