I don't think Trekkies necessarily love all of the series? Certainly Enterprise has its share of hate from all corners. But I wouldn't call myself a proper Trekkie either, because I think one has to at least given each series a chance, and I've yet to even try anything but TOS and TNG.
And yeah, Kirk's dad is totally Thor. I hadn't thought he could pull it off when the casting news broke, but damn if the man doesn't have a booming voice (the one true requirement for Thor, IMO).
