the value of things
The high priest asked him what it meant for him to wear it.
It's a symbol – of our union, our love, shows the world who we are to each other.
John shared some more personal stuff, like how he already went through one failed marriage before coming to Atlantis, how he wore Nancy's wedding ring because he felt he had something to prove to the world, but that now, he wore the ring for a very different reason and couldn't part with it. It was, for all intents and purposes, more than John had shared with anybody in his life – even with Rodney, he hadn't been this forthcoming.
But, he and the high priest were alone, and providing they never saw each other again after this, John thought it would be okay.
Gold was very valuable, it was a true and inescapable fact, but that wasn't what made John's wedding ring he wore now valuable. Its value was immeasurable just by the fact that Rodney gave it to him.
So, yeah, Mr. High Priest, sorry but he was never taking this ring off in this - or any other - life time.
