from: Astonishing X-Men #50

This is only a two-page cameo by Natasha in this book, nothing big, but well I was quite surprised by it and it felt like a great little nod to Wolverine's past days as an Avenger and that Natasha Romanov is one BAMF.

Also it's a funny moment, with Warbird's outsider moment bringing in some relief from this wild goose chase the characters seem embroiled in. (And for me, it sort of brings down the utter...scariness of the character, for lack of a better word. Warbird is a warrior woman from an alien planet; she's a character who loves combat and is not afraid to slice off heads of her enemies. Yep...she really did that. But this moment sort of shows that she's just in a strange land and still getting used to it and that she's not always ragey and combative, sword at the ready. I dunno; despite not knowing her very well, I already like her.)

an awesome fanvid I liked that came from vividcon2012:

Ramalama (Once Upon a Time)

Oh, show I miss you. I'm not too fannish where Once Upon a Time is considered for some strange reason (well that's not quite true - the reason is that the canon source is pretty awesome in of it self and I don't have to indulge quite as much in fannish works except for Belle/Rumples fic and a random end-of-series re-imaginings that I stumble upon).

I can say that the internet totally pressured me to buy this issue. IT WAS RECOMMENDED EVERYWHERE I TURNED. *peer pressure!* But it has awesome art that I can just look at forever and forever. I've only read this one issue and it's an introductory issue with a whole new team so I can't say much overall, but I like it. It's definitely exciting and though I don't know the majority of the characters (besides Zatanna and John), I'm starting to like them.

from: issue #3 (collected in Fables: Legends in Exile)
larger image: http://oi50.tinypic.com/eq4ra.jpg

FABLES is a lot like Once Upon a Time the tv show but in comics format. People have commented on their similarities and they are similar but not by much? Like the only thing they have in common is that they are modern adaptations of the classic fairy tale stories and fables most of us grew up with, and the fact that Snow White is kinda the central character with different issues and arcs revolving around the other characters too but it all ultimately ties back into her character much like how Mary Margaret's character is tied into OUAT when the different scenes branch out to fully explore the other characters in OUAT.

(Fables also has a lot of other mini-series that branch out from the main titles like, recently there was a mini-series on Cinderella and her job of being a spy. YES, Cinderella is an awesome spy in this universe and is a very cool character. And there was a mini-series on Jack from the Beanstalk fame - the one featured here in this scene; and there is also another comic called FAIREST that takes place in this universe and focuses on the fairy tale women.)

In this scene, Snow White rushes to the Fabletown jail to try to help Bigby (the reformed big bad wolf from Red Riding Hood and a few other tales) after she realizes Bluebeard came to the jail to try to kill Jack because Jack and Snow's sister Rose Red, tried to swindle the murderous Bluebeard out of money. The reason why this is an awesome comic book moment is because one: Snow White and a big-ass sword (the vorpal blade from Jabberwocky - which is admittedly better seen in previous scans) and two: JUST LOOK AT BIGBY WHEN HE SAYS 'MY HERO'; seen from a Snow/Bigby 'shipper's view (i.e. my view), it's kinda adorable and squee-worthy.

It's a safe bet to say that Fables is my favorite non-superhero comic.

Meme hosted by the Broke and the Bookish

so this meme asked for the top ten sites that aren't about *books* - comics aren't books though so I'm not really cheating. Right? I don't know. I do my own thing.

1. Tumblr: I feel like tumblr is the amalgamation of EVERY SITE ever on the Internet (and this list). But with more graphics and less annoying changes. I am on there way more than I need to be.
2. iFanboy: where I go for the majority of comics news; they also have nifty top 5 lists too and I can't resist lists (example: Top 5 Deaths of Jonathan Kent).
3. Archive of Our Own: this is the fan fiction site I left Fanfiction.net for (god FF.Net totally irritated me there for a few years with all of their changes and having to post anything new was such a hassle)
4. Comixology: so getting into comics is a bit daunting, getting into digital comics is EVEN more daunting, but I think sites like these facilitate that exchange.
5. Marvel: besides just being a great online encyclopedia of Marvel characters, the blog posts are worth a read as well.
6. DCComics: I really like their Preview Mondays and they've started doing creator profiles that are awesome - full list of creator portraits.
7. Comic Book Resources: while I get most of my comics news from iFanboy a lot of the time, the reason I really like CBR is they have previews of awesome comics that are due out that Wednesday or whatnot (um, I should say I am not all that enamored of its forums and stay away from them - and pretty much anything else with a lot of comments - but they do have awesome reviews and columns and blog posts like 'The Ten Cruelest Things Joss Whedon Has Done To His Characters').
8. Wil Wheaton's blog: so in my obsession-that-came-out-of-nowhere-and-punched-me-in-the-face phase of watching Eureka and seeing Wil Wheaton as the ass-holey Dr. Parrish (...I hope he won't always be cast in tv shows as the jerk character, I really, really hope), I somehow became a fan of his and then made my way over to his blog? Who the hell knows how these things happen. This post was especially awesome. (He also has some posts talking about the comics he's into at the moment which are relevant to me.)
9. Aria's Ink: the truly awesomest Sailor Moon site that's still alive and kicking (you have no idea how many awesome SM sites are long gone). And is SOOO awesome. I am not be as active there as I once was and I kind of feel sad about that, but you sometimes move away from your childhood interests and that's okay.
10. Twitter: gosh, Twitter is like the website that excuses you from talking about yourself nonstop about what you had for lunch; sure it's also practical for following famous people and authors and creators of awesome things, but it's mostly about ourselves, come on, who are we kidding.

from: X-Factor #207
larger image: http://oi45.tinypic.com/bhlgcp.jpg

X-Factor the comic is a spin-off of the X-Men title featuring characters from the X-Men stories. (Just trying to list all the X-Men titles since the inception of the comic in the '60s is enough to make your head spin off [god that was an unintentional pun].)

I have a time hard describing X-Factor beyond that. I first jumped in with like issue #215 and then went back to only issue #200 to get caught up and random two digit issues since then. Another reason why it's difficult is the title changed so much since it was first published in 1986. The way to go about describing it, as I know it in its current formation, is that it's basically a mutant detective agency (that's the simplest answer).

Throughout its 20+ years of publication, the team roster has changed a lot. First it was comprised of the original five X-men - Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and Iceman; then these five went their separate ways then came back, then they were mutant-hunters who pretended to be normal people to hunt mutants only to secretly train them to be "normal" and reintegrate them back into society (we can guess how well that went with the mutant community). Then they turned into a government team with all-new members for the first eight years in the beginning of the '90s - with some of the members also in the current run of the series now, Multiple Man, Polaris, Havok, Wolfsbane and Strong Guy; they then changed members again; then they were a Mutant Civil Rights Task Force but that is confusing as all hell even though it was only a 4-issue limited miniseries and finally we come to its current manifestation as a detective agency led by Multiple Man called X-Factor Investigations. -deep breath- Yep, that was a brief summary from Wikipedia, god bless it.

from: Batman: Gotham Knights #13
larger image: http://oi45.tinypic.com/2iscjnc.jpg

Batman: Gotham Knights is not a title I'm really familiar with except for reading this issue because it was the issue where Commissioner Gordon retired and I love Commissioner Gordon so I read it. Also, Gotham Knights is written by Greg Rucka - who also wrote Batwoman: Elegy and I liked that so there was a pretty good chance I'd like this too (Greg Rucka is actually a name I swear I'm seeing everywhere. He writes for both Marvel and DC and it is glorious). Even if I can't get into the title properly yet, this issue gives me warm and fuzzy feelings and is one of the best instances showcasing the Batman's and Commissioner Gordon's friendship. ♥

The reason he quits in this title is, I suspect, convoluted and long. This iFanboy article has a summary of his character since the very beginning for newbies that is awesome and I'd recommend taking a look.

From: Smallville Season 11 (2012) #1
larger image: http://oi49.tinypic.com/2ib2a7d.jpg
http://oi45.tinypic.com/2iaqz51.jpg

I know this comic premiered digitally only in April, but the small crumbles we get of Chloe and Oliver are just too adorable to pass over. (Clark and Lois are adorable too and we can say now that there's one book at DCU that doesn't mind showing their happy lives together as a couple. Yes, I know DCU broke up their marriage with the reboot a while ago and I should be over it...and maybe I will be in a few years down the road.)

Smallville as a show was about Superman's/Clark Kent's roots in high school up to college and getting a job at The Daily Planet and this season 11 comic takes place six months after the finale of the show. The art is something you have to get used to, unfortunately, as the artist tries sometimes to have the characters resemble their real-life actor counterparts and sometimes they don't succeed very well. The art might get better once the artist gets into the groove but as it is here in this first issue, I kinda wish they'd just draw the characters in their own style instead of imitating the characters.

from: Blue Beetle (2006) #25
larger image: http://oi46.tinypic.com/159fkm.jpg

Blue Beetle is Jaime Reyes' taking on the mantle of the alien scarab. While the comic is rightly mostly about Jaime and his quest to be El Paso's superhero, the supporting characters are awesome too (I wish we could've gotten more scenes with Paco and Brenda and how they navigated their relationship; damn cancellations). I fell in love with Brenda from the very first issue. And Paco grows on you too. (He wants to start a *pantless society* how can I not love the guy?! Pants are evil.)

This scene is awesome because the bad alien guys are after Jaime and pretty much every one else associated with him and they're kinda fighting for their lives here and Paco just totally kisses her because he thought she was dead and that he might never tell her his true feelings. asfldfjldkfslfjdsf Their love is an awkward teenage love which I highly approve of because Paco and Brenda are awesome separately but coupled together, they're awesome quadrupled.

So Paco/Brenda ♥♥♥♥

From: Detective Comics #859 (collected in Batwoman: Elegy)

"Sir, all I've ever wanted since my mother and sister were murdered is to serve."

So Kate Kane's aka Batwoman's origin is pretty frickin' sad (when isn't an origin of a superhero sad, I guess?); her mother and twin sister are murdered when she's young and when she's a cadet, she's facing some "allegations" (basically she was charged with homosexual conduct) that would get her discharged from the military. (Kate's mother and father were both in the military and she looks up to both her parents very much.) She has a chance to say the allegations are false and it's a simple misunderstanding. Of course Kate could do that, but that would be lying about who she was. What she does here speaks VOLUMES about what kind of character Kate is - that faced with either lying or being true to herself, she picks being true to herself even if it gets her kicked out of the one place she felt she belonged and the one place she wanted to be in her whole life.

(The next few scenes with her father when she comes home after being discharged from the military are pretty heartwarming too and are one of my favorite father/daughter scenes.)

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

Saw [livejournal.com profile] lil_1337 and [livejournal.com profile] frith_in_thorns doing this on their 'journals and thought it looked like fun.

My theme/topic: 100 AWESOME COMIC BOOK MOMENTS (these will most likely entail 'shipping moments - because BILLY AND TEDDYY KISSSSSSSSS FINALLY LIKE AFTER 12-ISSUES AND TWO CROSSOVER EVENTS PLUS 9-ISSUES OF AVENGERS: CHILDREN'S CRUSADE - but there will also be character moments too and/or individual/group scenes from old and new comics. I don't really know right now; kinda am winging it at the moment.)

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I AM EXCITED.

why, no this is not an excuse to talk about comics even more and all the time - well maybe it kinda is.

~*~

Speaking of comics (well kinda), Thor 2 movie news is apparently that a new villain will appear in the sequel. That's OMGGG YAY! Because I am finding myself sympathetic toward Loki the villain in the first movie and I kinda don't want him to be the evil EVERY TIME (like in The Avengers) ? OK? It's like Loki isn't inherently evil so much as he can be a bastard sometimes. But that's kind what sibling rivalry is about? Though with Thor and Loki it's kind taken to the extreme.

I have seen fan comments about how fans of Loki romantice his character and that comics!Loki is an evil bastard who shouldn't be liked. And maybe that's true? I am not familiar with comics!Loki except for that one Free Comic Book Day issue where Thor and Captain America (this is before they join Avengers because they don't seem to know each other) end up in Camelot and they find that Loki is masquerading as Merlin the magician and tricking King Arthur and the knights of the round table. But that's not so much evil as mischievous. And it was a really nice, awesome issue.

I just have a lot of Loki feelings, I guess. (And THE AVENGERS might change my mind about him once I actually see it.)

1. The Princess Bride
I remember the first time I watched this movie: I was sick with a fever and lying in bed, flipping through the channels and I randomly stopped on this movie. I had no idea what it was called or what it was about but I was HOOKED. (Which is why this movie is my go-to comfort movie.)

2. Star Wars (all six)

My twin brother and I are HUGE SW freaks (I say that lovingly). It's pretty much the only franchise beside Harry Potter that we bond over and I have precious memories of marathoning these movies during the summer with him (and whenever SpikeTV has its marathons and he's home).

3. UP

I have this thing where...in my RL I try to hide the fact that I am such a Disney girl (because with only two brothers for sibling companionship...let's just say I've endured a lot of teasing for my Sailor Moon and chick-flick love. Not horrible teasing but just silly teasing that brothers love to heap on their sisters. And I preceded to retaliate by hitting my brother. xD;) But this is one of those movies where they tug at your heartstrings and you'd just feel like a dead person if you didn't try to make the people in your life watch it.

4. The Mummy

I have only watched the second sequel (The Mummy Returns? I think?) but the first one will always remain one of my favorite movies and a movie I would be proud to foist on other people.

5. WALL-E

Pretty much why I have UP on this list too - because these two Disney/Pixar movies make you a *better* person by mere contact with them.

I also would've included Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Aladdin but I didn't want just Disney movies to overtake the list too much. And I have insane love for Young Frankenstein.

This is in no way a respectable book blog but I don't think it matters - at least I hope it doesn't.

This meme is hosted by Anna at The Weekly Enthusiast.

1. CHLOE SULLIVAN-QUEEN (from Smallville)

Chloe was definitely a major reason why I got into Smallville only when it *ended* (because The New Adventures of Lois and Clark will forever and *always* remain my first beloved Superman show and I want nothing to take its place, but Smallville might up up there with it as my fave show about Superman/Clark). She's just so AWESOME AND BAMF AND I JUST WANT TO BE LIKE HER AND I WANT HER TO BE REAL DAMN IT WHY ISN'T SHE REAL *SOBBBING*

2. ZUKO (from Avatar: the Last Airbender)

I can't articulate very well why I love Zuko except to say that I love his journey in AtLA; I love what kind of a person he becomes by the end, how very complex his character was. (I didn't like him very much at the beginning but mid-s2 or something like that, I found myself becoming very sympathetic to him and by s3 I was completely smitten by him.)

3. BURTON GUSTER (from Psych)

I can't explain my love for Gus without descending into a squealing mass of incoherence and blubbering. I just - he's AWESOME. OK? Trust me, if you hate Gus, then there is seriously something wrong with you.

4. MYKA BERING (from Warehouse 13)

I think while I've talked about loving EVERY FREAKING CHARACTER that comes through WH13, the one character that I *both* adore to pieces and find myself relating to the most is Myka. And we all like seeing ourselves in fictional characters.

5. STEFAN SALVATORE (from The Vampire Diaries)

This show is...ridiculous at times. In good and bad ways. And I have a lot of ~feelings about it. But the one thing I will always know is that Stefan Salvatore is VERY AWESOME AND MY FAVORITEST (with Damon and Caroline and Bonnie and Elena and Jeremy and Rebekah and Tyler as my other favorites).

1. Leave a comment to this post!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows.

[livejournal.com profile] lil_1337 gave me the letter G:

Gregory House from House
. So I'm not sure if I even consider myself a fan because I don't watch it regularly, just catch random episodes here and there. I just really like the medicine aspect of the show. House seems to be like a major jackass with no redeeming values whatsoever and I can't see why anyone would like him except the man is quite gorgeous but that's more Hugh Laurie than House. And then I see episodes where some of his humanity comes through and I realize that the man is not a jackass simply because he wants to be a jackass, it's just that he's honest and brutal and that sometimes doesn't win you over a lot of fans (his and Sue Slyvester 's character from Glee are quite similar to each other because she's not my favorite character either but I never know what to feel about her exactly). I guess the simplest way of looking at it is that they're both very complex characters so you can't really hate them or like them without wavering (at least I know I can't, I know they have their fans and to them I say, mazel tov).

Greg Sanders from CSI: Las Vegas.
I've fallen away from this show, and I did get interested rather late so the catch-up has been slow and mostly focused on watching only episodes with my favorite characters (which mostly consist of minor characters and the "Lab Rats", although that's not to say I don't like all the major characters either). But now the show is like in its 12th season, and I feel like some much of the show has changed (naturally...as it has been like eleven years it's been on the air) that I can't really get into it with all the excitement that I kinda sorta had since its sixth season. But anyways, Greg's character is awesome and who I fell in love with right away. Greg started out as the quirky lab technician with the wild hair and the colorful shirts, but then he developed and matured into a geeky, cool, sexy guy, less with the colorful shirts and wild hair (which I miss) but his character is still so very awesome.

Grumpy from Once Upon a Time
. Admittedly, when you think about the seven dwarves, you don't think of them as individuals but more as a collective, but with OUAT (as it does with every aspect of fairy tales), it develops the characters more deeply than the original versions do (and I'm glad to see this trend continue in other media, if the trailer for Mirror, Mirror with Lily Collins and Julia Roberts is anything to go by - them dwarves there look like they're very much individuals and not part of a set). Grumpy seems to be an honorable dude who believes in true love and takes the good with the bad. But my favorite dwarf will always be Dopey.

Burton "Gus" Guster from Psych
. Oh Gus. The ways in which I love you are innumerable. I know he's playing the straight-man to Shawn's comedic role, but I love that he's anal and so smart and so loyal. I don't understand why he doesn't have to beat people away with a stick, with how very awesome and sexy he is. Seriously.

Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation
. Alright, so I have to admit that my most, most favorite Star Trek series? Totally Voyager. And I feel like I can say this with authority even if I haven't seen the original series or Deep Space Nine or Enterprise or pretty much any other series in the franchise. Which is one of the major reasons why I don't consider myself a "Trekkie" because real fans would love everything in the franchise. But Geordi is awesome. He's nerdy and cool and smart. I love his friendship with Data too. He always does what he has to, even if that means he has to disobey orders, and I think that's partly because his convictions are strong and he's just an all-around admirable character.

some honorable mentions:

Galia the Orion girl from Star Trek (2009). So she's only at the very beginning and shows up briefly toward the middle of the movie when the characters go off on their separate ships to go to Vulcan, but she was very pretty and very perky and you could see that she was meant to be the total opposite of Uhura even if her character wasn't totally developed. I dunno. I just liked the little that we saw of her. She was kinda quirky.

George Kirk from, again, Star Trek (2009). He was only in the movie for 15 minutes and then [SPOILER] and...but I just really love him okay. Also apparently that was Chris Hemsworth playing him?
