So, yeah. I had written this way before I went to see Star Trek Into Darkness (like a day before, I think it was?) so it's not STID fic, but based on the first rebooted movie; only tonight I finally managed to proof-read it. The interesting thing, for me personally, is that it's in Spock's p.o.v. mostly, which is shocking because a. never would I have entertained I'd write anything Star Trek-ish (it's a wonderful fandom sandbox to play in, but so intimidating, quite like comics fandom, because there is this whole history behind it, and it's a cultural movement, and GUH! where would one even start? Which is why nu!Star Trek is so hopeful) and b. even if I were hypothetically to have entertained the idea in the first place, I wouldn't have pictured Spock to be my fandom ice breaker as it were (well...Kirk/Spock, but more Spock than the ship because, alas, the 'ship is practically nonexistent in this fic).

Also, another interesting thing is Kirk here says he's fine a lot, and in Star Trek Into Darkness, I noticed he says he's fine too. This was purely coincidental, and I don't believe him in either case.

So I went and signed up for cottoncandy_bingo on DW; I might regret it since school is starting up again for me this coming Tuesday and I will not have any brain function for anything creative whatsoever but well...we'll see.

And schmoop_bingo is kinda dead now and I've missed it because it was the perfect kind of bingo for me. But cottoncandy_bingo seems to be the same kind of bingo so I'll take it.

Dear self,
What are you trying to accomplish with this fic that's wanting to be an epic? Seriously, brain, get with the program and then send that program to my fingers. I would really appreciate it, thank you. (This is why I can't handle writing anything really long [really long for me being about 5k words] or handle brainstorm/outlining).

Unrelated to the above fic complaints - there was fic today:

I went to try out Dobra Tea yesterday afternoon and it's definitely my kinda place. I ended up ordering rose tea and something called Pita Jerusalem to try out for the first time (because they were vaguely familiar - unlike half of the teas, which I couldn't begin to pronounce, but maybe next time! The pita from my home country is often salty however and it was awesome trying a pita that was considered a dessert). They give you a menu the size of a book - A BOOK - and give you a little bell when you're ready to order. Seriously. I felt so fancy. (Clearly anyone who drinks tea is fancy to me - I dunno. I should get out more, I know, I know.)

Before that, I spent an hour in the comics store (the comics store and the tea store are right next door to each other which is awesome). I got Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre even though I'm not familiar with the Watchmen comics at all (or movie for that matter, or the Alan Moore controversy but now that I know about it, I feel kinda bad for buying it). Like I just brought it because of the very awesome art - seriously just look at that cover. Also acquired Spider-Men #1 and nine back issues of X-Factor.

And I just realized that it's been like two whole years since I've written anything for 100_women and I feel bad about this. (I tried to rectify it yesterday and thought I'd write something Lydia from Teen Wolf-centric about wings but it ended up being a totally different kind of fic? No mention of any wings - literal or metaphorical - unfortunately. Ah well maybe some other time.)

So at the beginning of this month, I had said that I wanted to write everyday for  [livejournal.com profile] 31_days because I want EVEN MORE CHALLENGES (like going to college full-time and working and trying to fit in studying and watching/keeping up with popular culture was not enough of a challenge for me, I have to go ahead and try to challenge myself to write every day too.)

I AM PRETTY MUCH ROCKING THIS CHALLENGE I SET FORTH FOR MYSELF.

There will definitely be a masterlist at the end and everything. Because dammit, after EVERYTHING, a master list will be AWESOME.

The thing is, here we are at day thirteen and I'm already deflated and wanting to just nap and not write. (Not that I'll beg for encouragement or anything because I don't want to seem TOO DESPERATE even though I totally am so very desperate.)
cc
Meh. Anyways: LOOOOOK AT ALL THE SHINIES THAT I HAVE WRITTEN (that I'll hate after this month, but let's not think about that right now):

PRESENTING THE SEMI-COMPLETED MASTERLIST OF FICS WRITTEN FOR 31_DAYS:
February 2012: Mixed Fandoms
  • 1st: The Earth is frozen solid, like a heart that will not love - First Interlude [Power Rangers: Ninja Storm, Cam/Hunter]
  • 2nd: My love a beacon in the night - this is my winter song [Power Rangers: Ninja Storm, Cam/Hunter, Blake/Tori]
  • 3rd: O, for a muse of fire! - do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips [Power Rangers: Ninja Storm, Cam/Hunter]
  • 4th: A candle burned on the table - First Comes Love [Power Rangers: Ninja Storm, Blake/Tori, Cam/Hunter]
  • 5th: Snowflakes are kisses from heaven - Waiting for Tomorrow [InuYasha, Kagome/InuYasha]
  • 6th: As seek to quench the fire of love with words I FAILED MISERABLY HERE BUT WILL TRY TO GET A STORY FINISHED BY AMNESTY DAY
  • 7th: ...Some say in ice - It's what friends are for [Warehouse 13, Steve, Claudia, gen]
  • 8th: Words are only painted fire - Back to the Beginning [Power Rangers: Mystic Force, Madison/Nick]
  • 9th: Only ice in the blood - ice inside your soul [The Vampire Diaries, Caroline/Tyler, Caroline/Klaus]
  • 10th: Fire is never a gentle master - In your arms and in your heart [Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, Dana/Ryan] [also written for Porn Battle 13]
  • 11th: In the ice of its own indifference - You Don't See Me [Power Rangers: Ninja Storm, Dustin/Marah]
  • 12th: Some say the world will end in fire - Curiosity Killed the Cat [Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, Dana/Ryan]
  • 13th: Love is the fire of life -- consuming, purifying. - For Always and Forever [Power Rangers: Mystic Force, Madison/Nick]
It's overwhelmingly Power Ranger based. Which. Y'know. I sometimes get a nostalgic craving to re-watch and suddenly...there's fic. Although it's kinda funny that I'm only now catching up on Mystic Force just for the fandom - as small as it is, after having sworn that Power Rangers ended for me after Ninja Storm and that was IT. A grown lady should not immerse herself in any more in kid-stuff. Clearly I have no qualms any more about anything.
dahlia_moon: (Ten Wet)
So I finished marathon-ing two whole seasons of Warehouse 13 plus the three episodes of s3 I saw when SyFy had their marathon last Friday. Once I can get a hold of season three, I'll watch that from the beginning too but so far Netflix doesn't have s3 (yet - blahhh). But I'm so proud of myself for getting through these two seasons in just one whole week! That never happens to me. I catch up on TV kinda like a turtle would catch up on races.

I'm also psyched that it's getting a fourth season.

Of course the minute I was (semi) caught up, I started plotting fic. A Steve Jinks/Joshua Donovan fic. I don't even know. I just know I need more of them in my life.
underneath your clothes (adult, 635 words) by favicondahlia_moon

And I rewatched recently s4 of another show I used to love once when it was on the air a few years ago, Wildfire. It made me think up (and write down about 1,000 or so words for mini_nanowrimo) of a Wildfire/Batman fusion fic in which Jason Todd = Kris Furillo's character, essentially. This is a story I'd really like to do, but it's a bit of an overwhelming project at the moment, mostly because I don't have any recollection of past seasons. I think this might be because I started watching late into s3 and never caught up and so am now tasked with watching the earlier seasons for the first time.

So many of the characters in Wildfire can translate quite easily into Batman characters too - well, maybe I'm exaggerating; only Jason's character can possibly translate over to the other universe while with the other characters, you might need to take some liberties.

And I just now realized: Kris Furillo is played by Genevieve Padalecki (née Cortese) who's married to Jared Padalecki (and she also played Ruby in Supernatural too) who plays Sam Winchester to Jensen Ackles' Dean Winchester in Supernatural WHO VOICED JASON TODD IN THE ANIMATED MOVIE, BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD.

Six degrees of fandom, MY MIND, IT IS BLOWN.
dahlia_moon: (Sokka's ready for takeoff)
I kept waiting for some awesome Mason/Alaric/Damon and wheeeeeee!! someone finally answered my prayers - Here Comes Another Fall from Grace (I'm Always Falling On My Face)

And this is the lone story I wrote for Fall Fandom Free For All:
Sigh. It doesn't look like I'll be filling in any of the other prompts. Some are awesome and I'd like to write more for it, but the blankness I get whenever I try to start one of them is mocking me and so I start hating it and walk away in a huff. Well, fine prompt, if you don't want to be written, I won't write you. *iz five*

Speaking of writing, I started a document a while ago where I drop random titles that pop into my head for future stories that I might want to write. So far there are only several titles with no stories:

oo1: this isn't the apocalypse, but if it were, there'd be more angst

oo2: all the right moves

oo3: strawberry girl

oo4: the last will and testament of bruce wayne

oo5: the batgirl club

Of course, it also happens that the ideas I do have floating in my head and that I'm trying to write down have no titles. I don't even know.

Also, more speaking of writing: trolling[livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo's friends' page, I found that someone had linked to something called Yarny...which looks like it's a writing program. Or something. For serious writers, who attempt novels every November (aka people who are NOT me but it looks fun to fool around with).

I haven't fooled around with it too much, but it looks like a plain Word document that also acts like an outline thingy. (I know there're similar programs out there but they cost money and this one looks like it's free>.) Which is yay for me because outlining for me does not end pretty. It's also providing to be useful for when I'm not on my own laptop, I can just log-in and access all my stuff (I know I could just email things back and forth between myself or have a private entry on here, but I'm pretty horrid at keeping updated versions and this saves automatically so you don't have to keep re-sending yourself emails or re-editing journal entries). Because I try to not turn on my own laptop until I get all my studying done and out of the way, but sometimes inspiration strikes and I can use my parents' notebook to jot things down. So there's that. And it has tags too, and you can color-code stuff *nerdgasm*.

And it's been awesomely easier for me to keep track of mini_nanowrimo stuff and daily wordcounts because there's a built-in word counter!! yayyy!! and I don't have to have a million word documents of sh*t saved on this - when I'm basically running out of disk space, as it is.

~*~

And my anime self:

I tried to put this up on Tumblr where I got it from but the image preview thingy is wonky and the image ends up being a very teeny, tiny not-quite-like-the-others image. Bah. So here's the site.
dahlia_moon: (SGA team awesome)
NEW TV and WRITING
  • Terra Nova continues to be awesome. I love pretty much everybody on it. I just wish they could tell us more about what the year 2149 was like. I know we know the gist of it, but some flashbacks wouldn't be remiss, show. And I know the point of the show isn't that the characters dwell in the past, but look to the future, and yadda-yadda ya, but if they don't look to the past every once in a while, they'll end up making the same mistake. And there won't be a rift in the time-space continuum then that they can escape to. Just sayin'.
  • Sped through the first season of Spooks/M1-5 which was kinda easy for me since it was only six episodes. I have spoiled myself on the subsequent seasons and if it weren't for Rupert Penry-Jones and Richard Armitage appearing in later seasons, I'd just give up now.
  • Psych is back!! Yay. The show is kinda ridiculous in a campy, I-don't-think-that's-quite-how-you-do things sort of way, but I love that it can be a silly crime show. You can laugh for an hour and I appreciate that. The sixth season premiere episode was so freaking awesome.
  • There was fic posted over the weekend. cover the earth with roses (Persuasion) and I told her all my heart (North & South). They're really short but I've found it's quite hard to try to write for period dramas if you totally don't want to be OOC (for either the characters or time period).
And I continue to watch way too much tv and movies. I blame Netflix. That devil.

dahlia_moon: (Aang & Katara - very please with themsel)
Six-word stories are awesome and addicting - but I could only do three of them for now. I can't even write six-word stories? That's pretty much my conclusion! And that HP commentfic isn't like even 100 words. I dunno.

The Vampire Diaries, Jenna, decision

The Vampire Diaries, Caroline/Tyler, shall we dance?

Stargate: Atlantis, any male scientist/any male soldier, danger

Harry Potter, Sirius/Remus, coming home
dahlia_moon: (Shelter- ShaunxZach)
I've debated on whether or not to crosspost this here because I'm so embarrassed I even wrote this - but, really, I should be getting over the stage of wanting to hide under a rock every time I write a smutty piece of fanfiction. It's not hurting anybody and if you don't like the subject, you know not to click. So really. I have no idea what my problems are.

But, yay!! at least school hasn't zapped all my writing mojo.

your arms took me in | Bewitched/The Dick Van Dyke Show crossover, Samantha Stephens/Laura Petrie | R, warnings for consensual infidelity

I had a Shelfari account, which I loved because it displayed all your books on like a javascripted magical bookcase (other book sites don't have that, blah) but now I totally can't log in. *sad, pitiful noise* (Well, I actually can now, but I had to make a new account when I logged in with my Amazon account because, apparently, now you can log into the site with your Amazon account. I'm just really tired of other websites taking over and changing the login requirements. I don't use my Amazon account for anything other than it being a convenient "wish list".) Oh well, not like I'm good at finishing books I start or keeping an online log at these websites.

There's this wonderful article titled "Fandom is Magic" recounting one woman's introduction to fandom. And I'm always up for reading how others discover fandom and what kind of experiences they have - it's just such fascinating stuff. The one big thing I got from the article is that fandom is a safe haven, if you will, for marginalized groups, which I totally agree on, but it makes me wonder. Is that why I love to read and write slash stories? Is it because reading and writing slash fics means I'm somehow "fixing" what seems to be a "predominant heteronormative perspective"? I don't know. I'd just venture to say that it's more about characters and who I love to pair up together with and that romance is very fascinating to me and, compared to other genres, something I want to invest a lot of time reading and writing. (Not that I mean to say I don't like any other genres beside romance, because I do, but some genres speak to me more than others.)
dahlia_moon: (Stargate Dream)
♥ Whooooo!! Finished my [livejournal.com profile] pink_stargate entry! The Quest for True Luv (John/Rodney intentional badfic with intentional misspellings and with the caveat that it shouldn't be taken seriously because it was hurriedly written in one day and meant to be bad.)

Now if I could only finish at least one prompt I signed up for smallfandomfest, I'd totally love myself. I desperately wanted to finish all three prompts I picked to write for, but seeing as this round ends in eight days, I'm not holding out much hope. GOSH WHY SO FAIL SELF Ah well, at least I started it - that's half the battle.

♂ So Tumblr has been awesome for finding writing advice that rocks (among other awesome stuff that rocks)! A few links:
Nuts and Bolts: Thought Verbs by Chuck Palahniuk
Kurt Vonnegut's Rules for Writing Reprinted (very general but some pretty important points)
Chuck Palahniuk's 13 Writing Tips (again, more general advice but worth a read)
Writing every day...

Actually, I'd recommend just going through http://writingadvice.tumblr.com and their tags and trying to read everything posted there.

next up: totally finishing up memes awesome people gave me and some thoughts on shows I caught up with this past week and maybe some reviews of awesome comics/books read/to be read. This is what happens when I keep opening up this blog window to write in and keep writing in it for weeks and never hit the post button.
dahlia_moon: (girl power)
♦ a really cool Smallville census wherein there are cool pie charts and numbers concerning all the characters that came and went through Smallville in its decade. really awesome and I'd recommend a look if you're into numbers and stats and such. :D

♣ Y'know how you stumble onto something in life - like a certain hobby, or person, or expectation - and then you find out it's really not how you thought it was? I don't mean to be deliberately vague but this is hard for me to put into words, but I thought, what with this being the modern age and everything, that this sort of thing shouldn't happen. And that is DC ignoring its female readers. There's a Tumblr I've come to recently follow that says it much better than I could ever put into words, but to actually know that a major publisher of comics isn't really trying to target you as their readers? (by which I mean females like me) is just really shocking, to say the least. I think between Marvel and DC vying for my money, I'll gladly let Marvel win (even if they end up being like DC and totally ignoring their female readers as well). DC Comics to female readers: we’re just not that into you

[livejournal.com profile] ribbon_purple is hosting a low-pressure Stargate (Atlantis, SG-1, or SGU) badfic challenge. As far as I know, you can write any badfic your mind can come up with and stories/graphics will be due July 21. So, if you're fan of writing intentional badfics and Stargate, take a look, yeah?

▲ Still trying to get into a good writing groove, which seems to have...vanished mysteriously for me someplace, which is particularly vexing because I have fic deadlines here, y'know, muse. I think Tumblr is all to blame because that site seriously sucks all the time into some space vacuum where twelve hours go by and you've done nothing but liked/reblogged a thousand pictures. Which is not to say that site isn't awesome or anything and I love it - as I think it's a particularly good way for a budding comics fan to really get involved in the fandom and expand on it - but dude, such a time waster. Alas, that could be said for the whole invention of the Internet - it can make you smarter and expand your horizons if you've lived a sheltered life, but on the con side, makes you waste a whole day doing nothing useful.
